Rob: oweo34, you certainly do hear a noise, a mahousive noise. Breaking the sound barrier means basically overtaking the sound you make as you make it. Slightly confusing i know. Imagine sound as a sinewave, now bunch it up till you can no longer make out the gaps between the peaks and troughs. It would leave a kind of solid line. This is a sonic boom, a �wall of sound� if you will. VERY loud indeed. It occurs when the plane achieves the same speed as = sound, or overtakes it.

Rob: The speed of sound is 763mph at sea level at 20degrees celcius. The jet in this clip could have easily attained that speed. Whoever said it was correct, that you need airflow over the wing to achieve lift, this however has nothing to do with the vapour wake and its angle due to the sonic boom.
