One reason America wanted to develop the atomic bomb as quickly as possible was the fear that Germany would develop it and use it first. They had been working on it for quite some time, and the V2 rocket was the preferred delivery system since it did not depend on pilots and crew. From the moment the Allies first heard about Germany's quest for atomic weapons, they did everything they could to try to thwart the attempt. When the war was finally over it was realized that Germany was no where near as far as first thought. It is estimated it would have taken them at least another three years to get as far as America did.

Hiroshima contained the 2nd army headquarters, which commanded the defense of all of southern Japan.
